5 ways to stay calm this exam season


Christmas is nearly upon us, along with a time all students dread – exam season. We know how important it is to look after yourself, so we’ve put together our top tips to help you stay calm during the upcoming storm.

  1. Take breaks

It’s important to give yourself a study break every few hours – your brain needs to rest! Go on a walk, go for coffee with a friend, or snuggle up and stick a Christmas film on. Remember not to take too many breaks, though. Those essays won’t write themselves.

2. Split your work into chunks

Whether you’re writing a 5000 essay, or attempting to revise everything you’ve learned in TB1, break your task down into manageable chunks. Set yourself small targets each week of content to cover, or words to write. Keep note of these in your diary and tick them off once they’ve been done. It makes revision seem a lot less scary.

3. Colour code

Remember those highlighters you bought at the start of term? Dig them out and use them! It’s surprising how effective colour coding your notes can be when it comes to memorising the important stuff. It’s a great excuse to stock up on colourful revision cards and post-its.

4. Consume plenty of chocolate

One of the many perks of Christmas is finding yourself with enough chocolate to feed a small village. We’re not encouraging you consume an entire tin of Quality Street in one sitting, but a little treat will definitely help with the exam blues.

5. Get enough sleep

As much as you may be tempted to pull an all-nighter fuelled by energy drinks and panic, it is not good for you. Stop studying a reasonable time and take a couple of hours to unwind. Read a book, have a bath and get in your PJs. It’s amazing what a good 8 hours can do for your stress levels.
